Youth for Christ

Tim Butler

Youth For Christ is a movement that reaches young people everywhere with the hope of Christ. We work with the local church and other like-minded partners to raise up life long followers of Jesus who lead by their godliness in lifestyle, devotion to the Word of God, and prayer, passion for sharing the love of Christ and commitment to social involvement. For more than 78 years Denver Youth For Christ exists to give every young person in the Denver metro area the opportunity to make an informed decision to be a follower of Jesus Christ and become part of a local church.

Tim is a Dallas native and came to Colorado in 1972 to attend a small Bible college called Western Bible Institute, now Colorado Christian University. During his freshman year, he volunteered with other students at a local juvenile detention center and became familiar with the ministry of Youth for Christ. During his senior year, Tim and Joy (who grew up in Holyoke) began dating and were married in August 1976.

In July of 1978, Tim and Joy accepted an offer to join Denver Area YFC to begin ministry as a Chaplain to incarcerated young people. Since then, he has served in a variety of roles (including Interim Executive Director) with both the local chapter and the national YFC organization, training other staff to work with troubled young people. Their home church, Littleton Bible Chapel, commissioned Tim as a Minister of the Gospel in December 1982.

In his missionary role as Chaplain at two juvenile facilities, Tim oversees teams of volunteers who lead Sunday morning Bible studies, mid-week Bible studies, and offer pastoral counseling to the youths as requested. Years of ministry with broken young people, and even the heartaches that come when youths are often sentenced to years of incarceration as an adult, have only served to deepen the call God has placed on his life.

Tim views II Samuel 14:14 as a profound description of what God continues to do in the lives of young people who are sometimes banished from society: “All of us must die eventually. Our lives are like water spilled out on the ground, which cannot be gathered up again. But God does not just sweep life away; instead, He devises ways to bring us back when we have been separated from Him.”

Tim and Joy are blessed with 3 adult children – one by marriage – and a grandson who all live in the Denver area.
